Town of Babylon Departments

The Town of Babylon's Department of Environmental Control is responsible for several functions within the town. The Department enforces provisions of the Town Code as it pertains to Environmental Protection. There are several departments that fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environmental Control. They are the Sanitation Department, the Animal Shelter, Bay Management and Shellfish Management, Town of Babylon SEQRA process reviews, the Town's Landfill, the Town's Residential Recycling Center and the Commercial Waste District.

Animal Shelter: is located at 51 Lamar Street, West Babylon. The Shelter has several programs that it provides for town residents. A town resident can go to the Animal Shelter to adopt a dog or cat, and turn in a dog or cat for adoption or to be euthanized for a modest fee. Dog Control Officers are assigned to the Department to enforce Article 7 of the Agricultural and Markets Law of New York State, and local laws and ordinances of the Town of Babylon.

Bay Management: Hard Clam Survey - annual survey of Town's 10000 acres of underwater land to determine abundance and distribution of clams and their predators. Spawner Sanctuary - an area stocked with clams at high densities with the hope of enhancing reproduction. To date, over 6200 bushels of clams have been stocked. Seed Clam Growout - Growout of one million 3-5 mm seed clams in rafts. Approximately 20 mm clames are broadcast into the bay. Over 25,000,000 clams have been introduced since the program's inception. Conditional Shellfishing Program - Opening of normally closed shellfishing areas based on rainfall. Done in cooperation with the NYSDEC to provide more accessible and protected winter harvest grounds.

Sanitation Department: is responsible for overseeing the operations with the Town's contracted private carters for both the Residential and Commercial Waste Districts. The Sanitation Department is instrumental in working daily with these entities as well as the Resource Recovery Facility, and Waste-flow in general.

Commercial Waste District: The Town's Commercial Waste District is located in the Town Annex, 281 Phelps Lane, North Babylon, New York and it is responsible for the customer service and billing of the Town's approximately 5,000 commercial entities that comprise the district.

Residential Recycling Center: The Residential Recycling Center located on Field Street off Edison Avenue in West Babylon is open for drop-off of recyclable materials such as plastics/glass, waste oil, car batteries, computer paper, telephone books, rocks/bricks, household batteries, junk mail, oil filters, metal/aluminum cans, polystyrene, newspapers, cardboard, concrete, tires. Also accepted are bicycles for the adopt-a-bike program.
