The Town of Babylon is one of the more culturally-mixed municipalities on Long Island. While most town neighborhoods are dominated by one ethnic group or another, as a unit, Babylon's demographics are multi-cultural.
According to the 2000 United States Census findings:
The town's total population is 211,792 with an average of 3.03 persons living in 69,048 households. Babylon is the most densely populated town in Suffolk County, with 3,996 people per square mile and 53 square miles of land.
The median family income is $66,261, although 4.6 percent of Babylon residents live below the poverty line. Almost thirty-seven percent of the town households have an annual income of $75,000 or more.
Demographically, the town's ethnic make up is approximately 76 percent white, 16 percent African American, ten percent Hispanic, and two percent Asian.
According to the census data, the largest ethnic group, based on ancestry in Babylon Town, is Italian, with 63,967 people claiming to have some or all Italian ancestry. People with all or some Irish ancestry number 43,417; Babylon residents with German ancestry total 31,723. Twenty-six percent of Babylon town residents reported having ancestry made up of various groups other than those listed on the census form.

AMITYVILLE VILLAGE

•

The hamlet's census district is 92 percent white, seven percent Hispanic or Latino, and only two percent African-American. However, the North Babylon School District is approximately 20 percent African-American, which is a figure far more reflective of the entire hamlet.
