Animal Shelter
Q. Where is the Animal Shelter located?
A. The Town of Babylon shelter is located at 51 Lamar Street, in West Babylon, between Wellwood Avenue and Straight Path.
Q. What are the Shelter's hours of operation?
A. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM. The shelter is closed Sundays and holidays.

Q. When can I turn in my pet for euthanasia or adoption?
A. The shelter accepts animals for euthanasia or adoption on Tuesday's and Thursday's between 8:00 AM and 12 Noon. Proof of residence in the Town of Babylon is required.
Q. Does the shelter have a Vet on staff?
A. Currently, the shelter does not have a Vet on staff.
Q. Does the Town of Babylon have a low-cost rabies clinic?
A. The town does not run a clinic to provide rabies inoculations or spay/neuter services. However, you can call for information on low-cost spaying and neutering as well as rabies inoculations at:

Q. Does the town shelter utilize volunteer workers?
A. The shelter welcomes volunteers. Please call (631) 643-9270, Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM for information.
Q. What breeds of dogs do you have at the shelter?
A. Most breeds are at the shelter at some time. Usually, the shelter houses shepherd mix, Labradors and terriers.
Q. Other than cats and dogs, does the shelter have any other types of animals?
A. Occasionally, the shelter will get rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. Usually these are escapees or abandonments.
Q. Can I board my dog or cat at the shelter?
A. The shelter does not provide boarding services. A listing of facilities that provide these services can be found in the Yellow Pages under "kennels".
Q. Who handles raccoons, opossums and squirrels?
A. Licensed trappers listed in the Yellow Pages under "pets".
Q. Whom do you call for problems with birds, ducks, and geese?

Q. Whom should you call in the case of a dog bite?

Q. What is the procedure for having a summons issued when a (dog) violation is not witnessed by an animal control officer?
A. Call the town shelter for an explanation of the "Affidavit" procedure.
Q. What is the procedure for filing a "Dangerous Dog Complaint" form?
A. Call the shelter for complete details. Maintain a record of incidents including names, addresses and phone numbers. Compile police reports and if possible, notarized statements from neighbors relating to the problem.
