The sidewalk area in front of a house is technically owned by the Town, however the property owner is responsible for maintaining it.
Q. Where can I obtain a passport? A.
Passports can be obtained at the Town Clerk's Office at Town Hall in Lindenhurst or through the U.S. Department of State. For information and forms, visit http://travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778).
Q. Where can I get a handicapped parking permit? A.
Handicapped parking permits can be obtained through the Services for the Disabled office located in the Town Hall Annex. For information and requirements, please call 893-1050.
Q. Who do I contact about abandoned and unregistered vehicles left on the street? A.
To report an unregistered or abandoned vehicle in the street please contact Public Safety at (631)893-1066.
To report an unregisted vehicle on someone's property, call Citizen's Services at (631)957-7474.
The Town of Babylon Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Directory contains information on most town events throughout the year. The directory is sent out to all town residents in early Spring. If you do not receive a directory, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (631)893-2100.

Q. Does the Town offer parenting classes? A. The Town of Babylon offers the very popular Parent & Tot Program, which affords children five and under an opportunity to socialize with peers and adults. Classes are formed by age and planned with the abilities and attention span of each group in mind. Q. How do I apply for the STAR exemption? A. Residents of the Town of Babylon can apply for the STAR exemption and other property tax exemptions between January 1st and March 1st through the Department of Assessment. Appropriate forms can be downloaded from this website (from this link: http://www.townofbabylon.com/forms.cfm) or obtained from the Assessor's Office in Town Hall. Please keep in mind that the deadline for filing applications is March 1st. If you have any questions, contact the Department of Assessment at (631) 957-3014.
Q. Can I make a complaint about a neighbor that is illegally renting out rooms in his/her house? A. Yes, the Citizen's Services Office, located in Town Hall or available at 631-957-7474, is able to take in complaints involving many Town-related issues. In the case that you would want to make a complaint about illegal apartments, a certain amount of information is necessary to enable inspectors to take the appropriate action. Complainant information is also requested, so that inspectors have someone to contact in the case that more information about the situation is needed.
Q. Who can I contact to report a clogged street drain in a residential area? A. The Citizen's Services Office is able to take in concerns that involve the Town of Babylon Highway Department, as well as other concerns. You can either visit Citizen's Services, which is located in Town Hall, or call 631-957-3089 to report the situation. From there, the appropriate action will be taken.
Q. When did the Town of Babylon start its recycling program? A. The Town of Babylon began its town-wide recycling program almost 18 years ago. Today, more than 60% of the town participates in the effort to recycle.
Q. I am interested in having wedding photos taken at Argyle Park. Is that a Town of Babylon park? A.
Argyle Park is run and maintained by the Village of Babylon, not the Town of Babylon. For more information on Argyle Park's availability, as well as the procedures that involve using it, please contact Babylon Village Hall at 669-1500.
Q. What can I do to notify the Town of a privately owned fence that is deteriorating and may need to be replaced? A.
Complaints about a privately-owned fence that is deteriorating can be made to Citizen's Services at 957-7474. Code Enforcement would then be made aware of the situation, and inspectors would act accordingly.
Q. How can I find out about death records? A. The Town Clerk, located in Town Hall, is the official keeper of all death records, as well as birth records, for the town. For more information on death records, please contact the Town Clerk's office at 957-3005.
Q. What can I do if my neighbor's trees are growing onto my property? A.
A tree that the Town does not own is the private property of the homeowner. If he/she does not maintain personal property, such that branches are hanging in your yard, an option would be to take your neighbor to Small Claims Court. Small Claims Court (631-854-1950) is located in the 2nd District Court building at 375 Commack Road in Deer Park.
Q. Where can I find out about boarded-up homes in my neighborhood? A.
Though there is no public listing of boarded-up homes in the town, finding the owner of the property would give you the ability to contact that person/entity. If you are trying to find out who owns a specific property, but you do not have an exact address, such information is available by filing a Freedom of Information in the Town Clerk's Office (957-3005), which is located in Town Hall.
However, in the case that you do have a specific address, the owner of a specific property can be found by using the computer system in the Assessor's Office (957-3014) in Town Hall.
Once the owner of the property is found, you would have to contact that individual owner to inquire about the property further.
Q. What are the guidelines for keeping a boat on private property? A.
A boat may be kept in the driveway, on the side property, or in the back. However, on a corner property, a boat kept on the side or in the driveway cannot cause a sight obstruction. It may also be kept on blocks when it is being stored.
Note: The boat must always be properly licensed and registered.
No. The New York State Fire Code prohibits open burning (Section 307; Paragraph 307.2.2).
It is the position of the Fire Marshal's Office that any open burning, chimenea or fire pits is prohibited. Open cooking fires are permitted on the property of one (1) and two (2) family homes. Any cooking fire on public property is only permitted in areas approved by the jurisdiction having control of the government property. Any violation of this ordinance is punishable by summons from any Police or Peace Officer.
Q. May I fuel up my boat behind my house with a fuel truck? A.
No. Fueling is only permitted in a marine service station.
