Q. Where is the Drug & Alcohol Division located? A.
The Town's Human Services Deparment manages the Drug and Alcohol Services division. They have two locations: a main site and presence at the Town's Annex.
The main location for the Drug and Alcohol Services division is 400 Broadway, Amityville, N.Y. and can be contacted at (631) 789-3700.
The division is also located at 281 Phelps Lane in North Babylon and can be contacted at (631) 422-7676.
The Drug and Alcohol Services division provides counseling services to anyone in the Town of Babylon who either has a drug or alcohol problem, or is related to someone with a problem. The programs can either be individual or group; counseling or education.
Q. What kind of services does the Drug & Alcohol Services Division provide? A.
The Town's Drug & Alcohol Services Program is licensed by the State of New York and staffed with licensed clinical social workers, licensed masters of social work, and credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselors.
At their two locations, one in Amityville and one at the Town's Annex, the Program provides confidential drug and alcohol outpatient treatment services to Town of Babylon residents who have substance abuse problems. The Program also provides services to family members or others whose lives are being affected by a loved one who has a substance abuse problem. Services include both a psycho/education group counseling series and group and individual counseling.
Clients, whether voluntary or those who are mandated, either by probation, parole or otherwise, must apply to the Drug and Alcohol Services program in person for the next available appointment. Immediate intake appointments are not available and but if a cancellation occurs, those on the waiting list will be accomodated.
Once an appointment is made, the client will be given written verification of this appointment time, date, and counselor they will be working with.
Q. How long is a typical program? A.
Each program is created based on an individual's needs and there are no set timeframes or durations. A counselor will work with the patient on a specific and individualized treatment plan with set goals and rules that the patient needs to accomplish to successfully complete the program. All goals will be documented and measured throughout the program. Once complete, the counselor signs off on those accomplishments.
Q. How long does it take to be assigned to a program? A.
Participants are asked to complete all admission criteria before being assigned to a program. That includes:
- An appointment with the Division's Medical Director for medical screening
- Payment of intake fees or proof of Medicaid, etc.
Once that is complete and it's been determined that the client meets the criteria for a drug and a drug or alcohol abuse or dependence diagnosis, a counselor will be assigned to the client and a specific schedule will be set that is appropriate to the services and individual.
All care is taken by the staff to evaluate and assign clients to the program as quickly as possible.
Q. Who do I call if I am having a crisis? A.
Crisis situations are those in which immediate action must be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the individual. Persons who are having a crisis are urged to visit us immediately. Our staff will meet with the individual as soon as possible to help resolve the immediate issue. If necessary, referrals will be made to more appropriate agencies.
If the individual is having problems with drug or alcohol use, accomodations will be made to either address the issue through an immediate intake appointment and staff will continue to work with the individual until a formal intake can be completed.
There are associated fees for services but no individual will be denied assistance based on inability to pay the fee. Fees are determined on a sliding scale dependent on services and level of income. All clients must show proof of income when requesting services. Medicaid and HIP insurance are also accepted.
Q. Can I still participate in the program if I don't have medical insurance or Medicaid? A.
No one individual will be denied services based on lack of insurance or payment. Patients are asked to submit proof of income and expenses and each individual situation will be assessed for proper course of action based on needs.
Q. Are my records and information confidential? A.
Yes, according to Federal Law, all patient information is kept confidential. Information is not released unless the patient's life, or the life of someone else, is in danger.
The Drug and Alcohol division has specific protocol for assessing life-threatening situations. All clients must sign a Release of Information Form allowing the division to contact a family member or significant other in the event of an emergency situation. However, this release does not allow the division to discuss a client's treatment progress with a family member or significant other.
Furthermore, clients must sign a release in order for the Division to report progress to associated referral sources such as Suffolk County Probation, New York State Parole, Child Protective Services, Department of Social Services, Drug Court, and the Drinking Driving Program. The Drug and Alcohol Services Division is also authorized to complete paperwork required by the Department of Motor Vehicles prior to th
