Adopt A Highway Program
Program Overview
The Town of Babylon established its Adopt-A-Highway program in an effort to improve the quality of life in the Babylon community by keeping our roads and streets clean. Community organizations, businesses, or individuals who volunteer to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program commit to collecting litter along a specific stretch of road in the town.

The adopted road is maintained by the group for a minimum of two years. Cleanups are conducted at least four times per year. The adopted street is identified by a sign, which is installed by the town, bearing the group name. The town provides orange safety gear for participants, garbage bags, and other cleanup materials. The town also picks up and disposes of the litter collected upon notification from the group.

Organization Participation:
A contract is signed by the participating organization pledging to keep the adopted  stretch of highway litter-free for a period of two years.  The clean ups must be conducted a least four times a year.  Proceeds earned by trash that is recycled may be kept by the adopting organization.

Town Participation:
The town will go over the safety requirements with the organization, provide traffic safety cones, trash bags and gloves, and will pick up the collected litter.  A contract is signed between the town and the organization awarding the group its adopted site and detailing the two year commitment.  The town provides a sign crediting the organization for its dedicated efforts.

Children under the age of 12 cannot participate in a highway clean up.  Volunteers under the age of 16 must have adult supervision present at the site.
