Town Defends 10/17/2005

Supervisor Steve Bellone has refused to remove two "God Bless America" signs displayed at Town Hall despite protests from two separate organizations.

In letters to Supervisor Bellone, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and The Center for Inquiry - Long Island Community have called for the "God Bless America" signs to be removed on the grounds that they violate the principle of separation of church and state.  One of the signs in question is an eleven foot banner hanging prominently on the front of Town Hall that reads, "Thank You to Our Troops, God Bless America."

"In displaying these signs, the Town of Babylon is expressing our community's support for the men and women serving our country in the Armed Forces.  God Bless America is practically our second national anthem and a sacred American motto.  I am confident that our display of these signs is not offensive to the Constitution and therefore I will not remove them," said Supervisor Bellone.
