Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Town Clerk Carol Quirk to recognize Leo Fernandes of North Babylon, who currently plays professional soccer for the Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union. A brief ceremony was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst to honor Leo, who was joined by family and friends, for his hard work and dedication. Supervisor Schaffer presented Leo with an official Town proclamation to declare Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014 as “Leonardo Fernandes Day” in the Town of Babylon to acknowledge him as a role model in our community and congratulate him for his achievement.
Leo was a star player North Babylon High School, where he earned All-State, All-Region and League MVP honors. As a midfielder for the Stony Brook University Seawolves, Leo was a four year starter and became the school’s all-time leader in points scored. In addition to setting records, Leo was named America East Midfielder of the Year three times and was Stony Brook men’s soccer’s first ever All American, among other accolades. In 2013, Leo was selected by the Philadelphia Union in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft. This past season, Leo appeared in 13 games, earning two goals and one assist.
