[ARCHIVED] Advisory: NY Makes it Illegal to Speed Past Garbage Trucks
The Town of Babylon would like to make its residents aware of a New York law that takes effect this week. As of Tuesday, November 1st, it is illegal to speed past sanitation vehicles. By classifying garbage trucks and waste collection vehicles as "hazard vehicles," New York is now the 12th state to enact a "Slow Down to Get Around" law, which builds off of the preexisting "Move Over" law.
Motorists must now reduce their speed when passing waste and recycling collection vehicles with flashing lights. A violation of the law comes with a fine of $45 to $100 and can carry a prison term of up to 15 days.
The New York State Legislature passed the measure in June, and it was signed into law in August by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
