Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Clerk Gerry Compitello recently attended the street renaming ceremony for John J. Zaffuto, a World War II Veteran who was injured twice while serving our country. Catskill Avenue in Copiague is now ceremoniously known as John J. Zaffuto Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets. Brendan Cunningham, a representative from New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s Office, was also in attendance.
Zaffuto, 97, has been a resident of Copiague since 1956. During his time of service in the European Theater, Zaffuto landed on Omaha Beach before making his way to Germany. Zaffuto completed his tour despite twice being injured in combat.
At the ceremony, Schaffer, Martinez and Compitello thanked Zaffuto for his service and congratulated him for the honor he received.
