[ARCHIVED] Town of Babylon Marks 19th Anniversary of 9/11

Town of Babylon seal

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board join the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association to welcome other elected officials, first responders and residents to the town’s hometown 9/11 memorial to mark the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that claimed the lives of 48 town residents.

The hometown memorial is located at Overlook Beach, which allowed the town to hold a socially-distanced service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also live-streamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend in-person.

Supervisor Schaffer spoke about the importance of remembering not only the victims of that terrible day, but also the brave first responders who have lost their lives to illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero as they sifted through the rubble. The names of the 48 residents killed during the attacks were read aloud, each followed by a single bell tolling.
