1. Where is the Babylon Animal Adoption Rescue Center (BAARC) located?

BAARC is located at 80 New Highway, Amityville.

2. What are BAARC's hours of operation?

BAARC is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Adoptions are available daily between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:30 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:45 pm. BAARC is closed on Sundays and Holidays.

3. How do I adopt an animal from the shelter?

Adoption hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 3:30 pm as well as Saturdays 10:00 am through 2:30 pm.  ALL animals adopted from BAARC leave the shelter spayed/neutered and all animals, except those under 6 months of age, receive a one year rabies vaccine. In addition, cats receive a FURVC vaccine and dogs are vaccinated with a four-in-one distemper in addition to Bordetella (Kennel Cough).

Adoption fees vary but in general the following rates apply:

Dogs:  Female - $90.00, Male - $80.00 

Puppies: Female - $77.50, Male - $67.50 

Cats: Female - $62.00, Male - $52.00 

Kittens: Female - $50.00, Male - $40.00

5. What are the fees for services at BAARC?

ALL ADOPTIONS WILL REQUIRE APPROVAL OF YOUR COMPLETED ADOPTION APPLICATION.

Adoption hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 am. to 3:30 pm as well as Saturdays 10:00 am through 2:30 pm. Before leaving the shelter, dogs are heartworm tested and given heartworm prevention during their stay here, dewormed, altered, and vaccinated for the following: Rabies, DAPPV, K9 Influenza, and Bordetella.

Before leaving the shelter, cats are FELV tested, dewormed, altered, and vaccinated for the following: Rabies, HCP, and Bordetella.

6. Does the Shelter have a veterinarian on staff?

The Shelter does have a veterinarian and a veterinarian technician is also on staff. They evaluate and treat Shelter pets only.

7. Does the Shelter offer low cost rabies, spaying or neutering services?

Currently, the Shelter does not have a clinic that provides low cost rabies vaccinations or spay and neuter services on premises. However, the Town has a low cost Trap/Neuter/Return program for feral cats - contact the Shelter for details at (631) 643-9270.

8. What types of animals does the Shelter serve?

The Shelter cares for all breeds of dogs and cats, as well as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs. Generally, these animals have either been abandoned or have become lost.

9. Where can I go locally for emergency veterinarian services?

The Commack Animal Emergency Hospital and the Veterinary Medical Group are both local organizations open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Sundays and Holidays, and serve on an emergency basis.

10. How does the Town handle stray animals?

BAARC does assist Town residents with stray animal concerns and should be contacted at (631) 643-9270 for assistance.

11. Who removes a dead animal from the roadway?

The Town will remove any dead animals from the public roadways. All inquires should be directed to Citizen Services at (631) 957-TOWN (8696).

12. Does the Shelter euthanize animals?

Yes, the Town's Animal Shelter does provide low cost and humane euthanasia of pets belonging to Town residents. In general, the Shelter provides this service Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Residents must call the morning they plan on bringing their pet in to confirm staff availability. Animals can be brought to the Shelter at those times and proof of residency is required. The shelter director may decline to euthanize an animal for humane reasons.

You may spend time with your pet immediately before and after the procedure. There is a $65 turn in fee for dogs, $35 for senior citizens and a $35 fee to turn in cats, $15 for senior citizens. All fees are cash only.

13. Is the shelter a "No Kill" shelter?

The term "No Kill" is most often associated with private shelters. Private shelters carefully screen animals before they are accepted for adoption. Any animals with medical or behavioral issues are not accepted. An owner of such an animal would need to look elsewhere for placement, usually a municipal shelter.

BAARC is a humane municipal animal shelter and accepts all stray canines found within the Town's geographic borders. All animals that are adoptable or have medical conditions that are treatable, will stay at the animal shelter until they are adopted as long as there is room. The shelters save rate is about 88% for dogs and 96% for cats. This rate is calculated on the total intake of dogs and cats regardless of age, condition or temperament.
